How Google and co rank websites

Never mind technical stuff like tags; nowadays most people agree the search engines have two main criteria for ranking websites: content and links.

Here's what Google themselves say about content:

In other words, having the right words in the right places the right number of times really matters. But you'd be amazed at how often this is overlooked - even by some web design companies.

Fortunately, the situation is changing. A TopRank Poll of SEO specialists in May 2007 asked 'What type of SEO skill is most important?' SEO Copywriting came out top - polling twice as many votes as the next answer, keyword analysis (which is actually an essential part of SEO copywriting anyway).

Link building, incidentally, was way down the list. Formal link building campaigns are also expensive and time-consuming - not worthwhile unless you're in a highly competitive field such as insurance or travel, where SEO copywriting may not be enough.
